The 2011 Hubert Curien Memorial Lecture

We cordially invite you to the 2011 Hubert Curien Memorial Lecture organized by the Cyprus Institute, entitled 'The Shape of Tomorrow'. Prof. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, will talk on the changing nature of the structure of knowledge.

Speaker: Ismail Serageldin

Prof. Ismail Serageldin is the founding director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the successor to the legendary ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt. Prof. Serageldin is also the chairman of the Executive Council of the World Digital Library (WDL), professor of the International Chair Savoirs contre pauvreté (Knowledge Against Poverty) at Collège de France, Paris, and has 30 honorary doctorates from universities worldwide.
Very recently, the US National Academy of Sciences awarded Prof. Serageldin with a Public Welfare Medal, its most prestigious award. He was praised as 'a pioneer in the movement to re-establish the importance of science in the Arab and Muslim world'.

Lecture: The Shape of Tomorrow

Prof. Serageldin's lecture is entitled 'The Shape of Tomorrow'. In his talk, he will discuss the changing nature of the structure of knowledge, and how it is transmitted inter-generationally and across countries. His radical diagnosis has implications for the design and management of institutions of learning, including education, research and supporting institutions of knowledge, like museums, libraries and archives.

In memory: Hubert Curien

Hubert Curien (1924-2005) was a physicist, and is regarded as one of the most influential scientists and science policy makers of the 20th century. He contributed uniquely in shaping the present European scientific scene and in fostering the benevolent application of science. As the founding chair of the International Council of The Cyprus Institute and as a board member, Prof. Curien's contribution in the planning and realization of the Institute was pivotal and profound.
